Palm sprouts are like wood in every way except that they may be bought using second-tithe money. Unripe dates are food but they’re exempt from tithes.

Beis Shammai say that fish become susceptible to ritual impurity after they’ve been caught; Beis Hillel say after they’re dead. Rabbi Akiva says, (they’re not yet susceptible) if they can survive (being returned to the water). Let’s say that the branch of a fig tree is broken but still attached to the tree by its bark. In such a case, Rabbi Yehuda says its fruit is still insusceptible to ritual impurity, while the Sages say it depends on whether the fruit can still live. Grain that was uprooted but that is still connected to the soil by even the smallest root is still insusceptible to ritual impurity.
