Can Kosher Cheese be Made from Cholov Stam?
Can Kosher Cheese be Made from Cholov Stam (e.g. US domestic, non-cholov Yisroel milk)? If yes, is it cholov Yisroel?
(A subscriber's question)
Kosher cheese can certainly be made from cholov stam. Such cheese is like any other cholov stam dairy product, and the OU and other kosher agencies commonly certify it. However, such cheese cannot be considered cholov Yisroel according to most opinions, as the status of the milk remains non-cholov Yisroel, even though the status of the cheese is gevinas Yisroel. (See Rama in Shulchan Aruch Yoreh Deah 115:2.).
