#73: Missing Words While Listening to Kiddush Recited by Others (Part 2)
- One who missed the final berachah of “Mekadesh haShabbat” has not fulfilled the mitzvah of Kiddush and should recite it herself or hear it from someone else (Shemirat Shabbat K'hilchatah 47:40). If one only missed a few of the less significant words (such as “b’ahava” or “ki hu yom techilah”), one has still fulfilled her obligation (ibid., based on Sha’ar Hatziun 213:20). However, Rav Moshe Feinstein noted that it is difficult to offer precise guidance as to which words are the less significant ones (The Radiance of Shabbos, p.66, n.14).
- One who did not miss any words of Kiddush but spoke during the beginning (Baruch Ata Hashem Elokeinu Melech Ha’olam) or end (Baruch Ata Hashem Mekadesh haShabbat) of the second berachah of Kiddush has not fulfilled her obligation. However, one who spoke during the middle of the berachah has fulfilled her obligation if she did not miss any words (Bi’ur Halachah 193:1).
