#3: The Importance of Each Person Preparing for Shabbos

  1. The Shulchan Aruch (O.C. 250:1) writes that even if one has servants or others to help prepare for Shabbat, one should try to do some of the preparation oneself. It is a greater honor to Shabbat to prepare oneself than to have others do so on one’s behalf. The Shulchan Aruch notes that many great Amoraim helped with Shabbat preparation as well.
  2. Although the Aruch HaShulchan (250:3) tries to defend those who appoint other household members to prepare on their behalf, many poskim recommend that everyone help out. This is an important point that we should keep in mind: Not only should we try to prepare for Shabbat ourselves, we should encourage everyone else in the house to do so as well, according to their capability.
